One way is to unmount eject all volumes on the external drive, unplug the USB cable, and plug it back in. I tried zfs on Mac a while back. There are definitely rough edges depending on how you push it, but I think it hit all the core usability criteria once spotlight support was added and became stable a lot of Mac functionality depends on that, before then it was a lot more limited. With one Mac, it never happened. Maybe in my younger days I would have been purer of spirit.
